John Baker lives in Kotzebue, Alaska which is located on the shores of Alaska’s western coast thirty miles above the Arctic Circle. Baker chooses to live and train his dog team in Arctic Alaska, where the winters are long and the location is remote, perfect for putting that extra competitive edge on him as the dog driver and the dogs he runs with.
“I dream, I try, I win” is Baker’s motto and he is often invited to speak with young people with whom he emphasizes the importance of having a dream; setting goals to pursue what is desired; and taking action to make the dream a reality. John Baker’s story exhibits one who has faced a variety of challenges while staying focused and he encourages people to “believe in yourself and never, never give up”. Baker’s identity is linked to the people who reside in rural Alaska who he says have given him so much support”. John is purposeful about giving back to the people and is always eager to share his life experiences – especially with the youth who live in the villages.

Narrated by a young schoolgirl from Shungnak, Alaska, this story of determination is based on the current life of John Baker - an Alaskan dog-team musher from Kotzebue. School children can relate to the lesson of 'work hard do your homework and you'll be ready for the big test'. In this case, the big test is the famous Iditarod dog-team races from Anchorage to Nome.
